Friday MVCA had their second annual staff vs. the team basketball game. I think it's always a little intimidating for the kids because they are going against their teachers. We had a nail biting competition with three overtimes, and the Navigators WON!! Their first win of the history of MVCA. Always a first for everything! They had a great game and really pushed themselves. It's neat to watch these boys. Half of the team had never dribbled a ball two years ago, and certainly didn't know the lingo or that there was actual strategy to the game. They have pushed themselves hard, and are still getting familiar with the game, specially outside of practice and in the "real deal". We are so proud of these kids as their spiritual walk has been number one, and their attitudes have not faltered. They were really pumped that they won though... specially now that Coach Hackett has to shave his goatee! As a spectator, I was really struck by how attentive those boys are to Leo. Being their coach he felt bad having to play on the opposite team, so when they took breaks he would go over and coach them too. Even though he was the opposing player, they listened hard and you could see the respect they had for Leo. That was just neat. Course on the flip side.... when Leo was on the court he scored something like 24 points another player (Mr. Pressel) made 20 points. I'd like to tease him and say he was giving false coaching to the kids so he could do better on the court... but that wasn't the case. (Leo's just really good at basketball... he reminds me of a rabbit. He's fast, and in one moment he'll be in one position and the next he's popping up somewhere else.)
At the end the adult team gathered around and did a cheer for the Navigators "Good job Navigator's". In response the Navigators huddled around with hands in center and yelled "Good job Old Guys". It was pretty funny. After the game Leo did awards for the kids. Overall it was a great time of fellowship and we were happy that the boys won!

After the game....all the players.

Final score!

Second overtime....Leo put in the basket as the buzzer was going.

First overtime.

The "Old Guys" tuckered out! I have to hand it to the older team... they were playing their absolute hardest!
