It struck me as funny this morning so I thought I would post it.
Spring is in the air in Oregon.  The flowers are blooming, the weather can't decide what it wants to do, and the sweet smell of road kill is in the air.  Yep, that's right, road kill.  As I drive to work I drive along two highways, and I've been noticing more and more road kill gathering on the road.  This morning I made it a point to count the road kill.  I passed six skunks, one raccoon, one possum, one fox, two unidentifiable, and a live fox (undoubtedly the next to be road kill) waiting to cross the road.  Needless to say my drive in has an array of unpleasant smells this time of year, but it always brings a smile to my face particularly because it makes me think of two special people in my life..... my parents.  Now some of you are probably thinking "That's HORRIBLE"... but it really isn't.  My father was sprayed by a skunk when he was a kid and now has this sixth sense of skunkness.  He can smell one from miles away before any of us can detect one.  He's always say "Whew, can't you guys smell that?!", and I knew to hold my breathe because we would shortly approach one.  I always thought that was strange because he can't smell anything else.  There have been multiple occasions that we've been in the forest or around something sweet smelling and he hasn't been able to smell it.... but always the skunk, it sometimes makes me want to cry.  I'm thankful that of all the disabilities in the world that that is the only one my dad possesses.  It also makes me thinks of my mom who used to work a neat job for a science center and camp (camp Perkins) in Texas.  When she took kids out on a tour she was the "Skunk Lady".  I remember it first embarrassing me, and then I thought it was pretty cool that she was the skunk lady.  (Course everything seemed to embarrass me when I was a kid-- Walmart, salvation army, eating alone, dumb things like that.)  She had an actual pelt and skull and told the kids she had a vile of skunk fluid... which was really hand washing soap, but the kids sure played it up like they could smell the skunk.  Now when I pass this horrible smell, I always inwardly smile and think of my parents.  I love you guys!

There's some good news and some bad news to this story. The good news is Dad now has 3 additional smells added to his total olfactory repertoire. The bad news is those new fragrances include B.O., bad breath, and diaper poo...just thot I'd share!

Now Jen, you have a new reason to hide on the floorboards of the car, totally embarassed, and you won't even have to be in a Salvation Army parking lot!

We love you, too.
